Michael Lemm | | You hear lots of discussion everyday about the personal "failure rate" amongst those who "work for themselves". It's a pretty popular subject for forum discussions. There's plenty of sad stories passed around. Note: some stories are definitely legit, don't get me wrong here. But often there's "more to the story" as Paul Harvey would say.
Folks complain about their "lack" of results (notice I said "their" lack), blame everything but themselves (usually), constantly search for "the" way to turn things around (e.g. "the right system"), and/or routinely jump to the next "thing" because the last "thing" didn't work.
Now hold on their Cowboy (errrr....Cowgirl too).
"You" need to step back....breath deep....and take another look.
I believe there are some who are cut out to be their own boss and some who are not. We come across people everyday looking into starting their own business....using all kinds of models and business types. But unfortunately many don't really know if they have what it takes. Too often they're coming from the "give my boss 40 hrs/wk, collect a paycheck" mentality. Or worse yet..."sit on the couch eating Doritos 'cuz it should be so easy". That just doesn't work.
Before they/you get started into business for themselves/yourself there's a simple test called the “Self-Employment Test”.... specifically designed to measure your prospects for success. This is the perfect self examination to get people thinking about "working for themselves".

The test is from the book, “Is Self-Employment for You? by Paul Casey (you can get it at Amazon.com if interested). This book goes beyond the ABC’s of how to write a business plan but examines the potential entrepreneur’s emotional readiness and personality traits that ultimately make the difference between success and failure.
This test is very simple. Read the questions and assign yourself a number between 1 and 5, where 1 is the lowest score, and 5 is the highest. For example, in the first question, "Are you a leader?" A score of 1 means, "I have absolutely no leadership skills whatsoever. My dog doesn’t even follow me on walks." A score of 5 means, "I am an experienced leader in every sense of the word. If not for my dream of starting my own business, I would be running for president."
As Paul says....you need to be completely honest with yourself on this test! Do not make yourself out to be more or less than you really are. Again, this test will help you to determine your prospects for success, but only if you are honest in assessing your own strengths and weaknesses.
Anyway don't despair if you don't score well it just means you may have a few things to work on. If you're willing to that is.

I need help in two areas which I score below average.I take score no 3 as the average mark.
Hence I score a 2 for question 12( on being sociable) and question 25 ( on finances).
So for those who get top marks in these areas,please give me your tips. If it is lengthy, do pm.
On the other hand I scored 5 for question 4( on patience) and question 5 ( decision making).
So for those who need tips on how to be more patient and how to make decisions easily,just pm me.
Hmm, on second thought, perhaps we can start a thread...lasting 25 weeks.
For the first week, all those who scored a 5 for question 1 will share their tips.
Then on the second week, all those who scored a 5 for question 2 will share their tips. And so on.

This is my first post on both the Entrepreneur Network and Ryze in general.
This network compelled my to step in and start, so at the very least I thank you all for that. In addition, I enjoy this post. I am currently studying entrepreneurship at a university and it's incredible to see the correlation of my studies with this recent business my parents stated.
I've come from a long history of entrepreneurs, so I must attribute my genes for my insane need for risk, accomplishment, adventure, and long hours...
According to this test I scored a 94, which was perfect. It allows me to see where I excel, but conversely where I could use a push. I still have time to plan and hone my skills before embarking on my haphazard yet purposeful future, researching myself seems just as important as researching the industry I look to enter.

I did score 3 points on question nr.5 and I was not very please with that. My husband scored 5 points on that.

I have been looking for a business partner for my 6 star condo hotel+ conference complex project all over the world, I almost stopped looking because I thought I wasn’t cut out to be an entrepreneur after all.

Ok-- I have an open, honest and question-- strictly out of curiousity. I know some of you have been in business a long time, so you may have a good sense about my question. I'm not looking to beat up on anyone or make any point at all. (I know-- a long preface!)
Where are the top women entrepreneurs? I wonder why the vast majority at the top are men? If I scroed 113, other women have been around that, too. I know many of them. But I often wonder, why are all the successful online business folks we read so much about men? The questions on this helpful quiz are definitely gender-neutral and not leading in any way. So I have to wonder.
For example, Dan Kennedy has a pre-launch of a new product where he interviews 25 successful entrepreneurs. Among them are only three women; and one of them is in partnership with her husband. Is it because we only hear/read about the guys who made it while the succesful women are quietly making their millions without being "out there?" Or is there some trick that most women entrepreneurs don't get?
As I'm looking at who posted here, up until now-- guys.
Any ideas? Again, I'm not trying to stir things up here. I think anyone who works to acheive their goals deserves their success. Just wondering out loud why more women aren't yet joining the men at the top.

Even in elementary school I was creating projects and running teams. My score was 116. I fall short in patience and in seeing the detail while keeping the vision in mind. I am the visionary! Some of the scores 3 to 2 where I do need to improve:
"Working Alone": I thrive working with people.:-)). I am energized working with people. I would feel isolated if I work alone most of the time.
"Handle failure": I get disappointed when I do have set backs. Maybe something to do in a "go getter" world mindset?
"Focus on small detail": I tend to look at "big" picture and hire or get volunteers to do detail tasks.:-)).
"Working under pressure": I dislike being in a "pressure cooker". I like to take my time and keep working at it and complete it.:-)). I do not like "forced" deadlines that are not reasonable.
"Multiple tasks": I focus on getting things done, one at a time.:-)). It seems many women are good in multi-tasking.:-)). Something to do with more connections in the brain?

I am relatively new to this network, but not to business. My weakness is writing about myself, but it asks for background so here goes.
I took the quiz and scored 106. I have long known about my weaknesses in business but have started-up five companies from scratch. I raised multi-millions in funding for some and grew a couple from a shoe string budget when I first started being entrepreneural.
My background initially was big corporate. I ran a large division for a $40 Billion Dollar company and had about 3000 employees. To move ahead any further in the company, they were asking me to move somewhere I didn't want to go, so I took my stock and retired from there.
I figured that if I could run a billion dollar divison of a company, I could run my own business. Was I wrong!!!
I learned gut wrenching, sleep robbing, marriage wrecking,
and bank account draining lessions. I decided to learn from those that had started businesses and been successful
and surround myself with people that could bring the talents to business that I lacked.
Back to the Quiz therefore! The results of my painful lessions, out of the 5 firms I started- 3 grew in multimillion dollar businesses which were sold for a major return on investment, 1 failed and one continues to be a major corporation. I made a lot of friends, and there were a bunch that didn't like me and probably still don't.
If you have the bravery to try being an entrepreneur, learn that you might not be able to do it all yourself and learn to excel in everything, otherwise we all would get perfect scores.LOL Get help from your partners, upline, fellow Ryze members or paid specialists and hopefully avoid the painful lessions. Interesting Quiz!

I work with small businesses and have found many that the owner should have taken a test like this before going into business. Just because a person has knowledge in a certain product or service does not mean they should start a business.

It's the people that learn from their failures that become incredibly successful. Take me for example, I have lost everything at least twice now, but I know that my experience has made me wiser and more resilient to failure. Not everyone understands what it takes to lose everything and then get back up and take another swing at it...for those of you who do; awesome.
I always cringe when I hear someone say that they will do whatever it takes to succeed...there are some thoughts that go through my head when I hear that, namely: does your spouse feel the same way? Would you donate plasma for gas money? Have you ever missed payroll for 10 employees? Have you ever missed payroll when your closest friend is on your payroll? Have you ever had your water/electricity turned off? You see, when you say that you will do whatever it takes, it means that your spouse is going to be affected as well. I have been fortunate enough to have made it through some ridiculously tough times and STAY MARRIED...it says a lot about my wife. Anyway, selling your plasma sucks...I would do it again if I had to, let's just hope that I don't. In the mean time, my company should hit $1mm in revenues this year...Let's hear it for perseverence!!!!

I'd like to comment on Felicia's response concerning women entrepreneurs.
It's all in the numbers! Many successful male entrepreneurs and business owners fail numerous times but keep up the fight and struggle to make it. It's my belief that women in general are not wired for accepting all the failures one experiences when being an entrepreneur. Notice I say in general.
Ask yourself have you ever been in a conversation with a group of women or at a convention and they are discussing all their failures, but yet they tell their friends on how they are going to succeed. Most women will give support and and be empathetic and suggest that they change their dreams, so called be more realistic.
I walked away from my corporate job approx. 5 years ago. last Friday I met with financial backers that want to increase my sales dramatically and possible partners.
When I started my company my accountant (a women)did not see the value in it would not touch it with a 10 foot pole. My wife was skeptical, it was not a pretty picture.
I persevered stuck to my guns and would not take no for an answer.
Call me crazy but but most women and men would have thrown in the towel along time ago.
Even if its just a slight differnce in the way women look at failure, it makes a huge difference in the number of times one fails until they are successful.
When I reach my financial goals I plan on discussing that topic to women at a seminar designed for entrepreneurial women. It's important I do that since I constantly tell my daughter It's ok to fail just learn from your failures.

This is a great approach to the question of 'are you really cut out to be an entrepreneur, but can I put forward a contrarian view?
Namely, I would like to support the idea that it is not the type of person that makes an enterprise succeed but rather what they do and how they go about it. On that basis, anyone with a passion and commitment to their idea can make it happen.
I say this on the basis of personal experience and a deal of academic research, although I am aware that it is hard to dismiss the idea that people with, say, a high need for achievement, is more likely to succeed. I guess I just like the idea of inclusivity within entrepreneurship.
Am I just an idealist??

I am in agreement with Mark. I blieve that when it really comes down to push or shove, a person can learn about money, or the way of the world, or marketing strategies. (many management and marketing bibles got written that way) Provided the person is intent on making his idea ( I would like to substitute that word with dream) a reality.
Provided a person is passionate about it and knows what he/she wants.
Entreprenuership is a challenge because it asks us how far we are willing to stand by what we believe in. Given, this it does take a different breed to dare to walk that path let alone succeed. Given that we need the smarts to make any dream a reality. Call, me an idealist because I believe that true entreprenuer is much more about the human spirit than it is about the balance sheet.

Not to intentially be the voice of discourse but being a coach this test look to me like an all or nothing proposition. I have coached may who given their own Business IQ would of failed. It's not about where you are at it about getting empowered to get there. Now I do agree that there are alot of programs out that that are really only meant to take avantage of some. I also know that from a biblical point of view God insist that we be business people. In fact he is very clear about this in Prov 31 about the virtous women being able to consider her field, and buy it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She girds her loins with strength and strengthen her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goes not out by night. She makes fine linens and sells it. I'm skipping verse her but you get the idea. Even when I was a secular coach it became clear that mentoring others was part of the responsiblity to give back. It was be so easy to give a test make judgements about where you are or others. Soon we will have Hr using this. There are tons of business people who failed and failed and then because of all that failure made it big. If you are going to coach someone like that you have to figure out what the speck in their eye is that they are trying to create and may not even have enough language for yet. It doesn't mean that they don't have something valuable to contribute. It's up to us who are successful to peal back that sculpture and find out God's intentions fo this one. It's more complicated. Not an easy answer as a test. If you believe as i do that God provides the increase many times it has nothing at all to so with their talents or gifts. I have seen it that if there is a Vision and it's that person has been adequately prepared.. nothing will stop that Vision from coming into manifestation and it will look to me and you that the person in charge knows nothing about what they are doing. Dani Johnson a Coach worth millions says there is so much I just don't know how to do and he shows me. I just say becareful about boxes. I could use old secular coaching language here about paradigm shifts and the like and show you example after example of those who knew nothing, had the courage to step through and the opening was there, they were there at the right time and success happen. It is not a phenonmenon for only thoses with the right stuff all neatly in place. As a secular coach, deathly ill with a severe eating disorder I was being trained as a coach. I help develop a company that grew into an eight state franchise. The Ceo of that company will tell you that I found a way to make possible all that he didn't think was... here is the joke. He was my mentor with 20 more years coaching experience than I.

I think a lot of people missed the point of finding out your weak points (assuming honesty and being a good judge of oneself when answering) and trying to improve not to score 120 but to increase your chances of success.
I scored 95 and I am glad I did since it allowed me to review my lows and think of what I can do to improve.

Entrepreneur: One who initiates and assumes the financial risks of a new enterprise and who undertakes its management. Simpler said than done. However I say with the right scenario you can be successful and fulfill/achieve your Dream.
Very cool test, however for those of us that scored 120-125 I agree to disagree with the analogy/philosophy of the results. We may have a big head or ego lol but if you are a true leader/entrepreneur/business owner, you build up your "team" to make them #1 and direct business accordingly. Making it a win-win situation for all.
Just my opinion...If a person has a realistic Dream, a Mentor, Coach, Team with the same goals/wants...you can be a Entrepreneuer. You need to have in the mix a plan, system, direction, implementation, infrastructure, methodology and the resources to make it happen. Seed money is good to lol.
Are you really cut out to be an Entrepreneur? Regardless of what you scored on the test. If you're fortunate enough to have all the tools and team available to you, along with your commitment to make it happen...Walla! You have what it takes to be successful Entrepreneur!

Great resource and test. I took it and scored a 92. As you have pointed out several times on this thread, this test is really good at showing me where I need to improve. I scored lowest on being social and trusting people/enjoying being around them. I guess that's why I enjoy doing online marketing so much. I can connect when I'm in a good place to do it whereas oftentimes doing face-to-face business has to be done during certain hours of the day. I'm kind of an online MLM hermit.
Patience was another sore spot for me (I am patient over the long haul but not when I have to deal with all people all the time). Very good test. I'm going to recommend it to my business partners and see where they stand. It might help them see a lot about their ways of doing business as well.

I figure, if I could work hard and get up every morning work 40+ hours every week at someone else's job, I could put that time and energy into working for myself. Along with a great idea, more hard work and presistence.

It's true that persistence is very important is sustaining a business.
It's pretty much like working out, very often when we're about to break our record, we give up.
Most people do the same, give up just as they are that close to success.
Me thinks it's also important to set goals before going into anything since it gets your priorities right.
Starting a business and just saying "I want to make big bucks and retire young" is definitely the highway to failure.

Based on my experience, I could think of one more question that can possibly be added to the list which is: "Are you tenacious?" or it could also be "Are you persistent?" This in places like India is very useful quality for entrepeneur to have.

Today is my birthday. I planned on having the day off with my grandaughter, My staff could not get to work because of the snow, so I ended up giving my daughter the day off to care for my grandaughter, and running the shop, fishery and snack bar on my own. I finished at 5.15, came home and I now have to cook for 7 people. I received a call from I won't say who. about taking part in a training excersize helping me to become a millionaire. I politely asked if I could call back or could they call me another time. I was cold, wet tired, upset and still with work in front of me. The comment I got was if you cannot find the time to talk NOW then you are not the person we want in our team. FINE excuse me! Maybe I do not want to be in YOUR team, Maybe you won't care enough about me! Maybe it will take me longer to become a dot com millionaire. Quite frankly right now, I do Not care!

The only jobs I actually stuck with was the ones where I ran the show. Started flea marketing and selling with my parents at the flea markets. I made my own jewelry and sold it at the market. As I got older and going to college I did home party plans and door to door Avon. I have always had that entrepreneur spirit.
It worked out good for myself and my husband when the economy got real bad in Michigan. My husband lost his job two years ago. His job was independent contractor so there was no unemployment to live on. He learned he could work at home with me. We offer web hosting, web design, advertising specialties, network advertising, and social media advertising. Yes, I still go flea marketing in the summer. If we didn't have our own businesses before the crisis happened a few years ago, I truely believe we would be in a homeless shelter. We not rich but we get by and we not in a shelter with nothing. We appreciate what we do have.
I looked in the paper the other day the town Greenville 10,000+ people in central michigan not far from Grand Rapids had one job in the paper...Avon Rep. I already done that in the past. Not even hiring nurses right now...that was amazing!
