Paul Finkelstein Early bird Entrepreneur - omgtalk.com

Hi ya Scott A and ALL,
I was wondering if motivation is always ON and
Entrepreneurs stay tireless cause they have a goal and
they stop at nothing.
Rejection doesnt stop an entreprenuer.
Does the entrepreneur ever get burned out, tired need a boost,
etc?
do you listen to tools like the secret:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b1GKGWJbE8

Or read books, certain business books, marketing books,
PMA books?

Reply.
Kindest regards,
Paul

Technically Ryze is a business networking TOOL. A very good BNT.
(Biz networking tool) Ever remove a fly off someones forehead w/an ax?
But if you dont know how to use a tool, you could get unpleasing result.
Extreme, but very good analogy when someone uses harsh words in email.

The A-#1 way I get motivated?

Call a friend. I have some absolutely fantastic people I know who I can always count on to help me put things in perspective and find the "light" in the situation.

BTW, three of the top four of those I met here on Ryze. The other I met through my coauthor.

And it's not just those four -- those are just the ones I know I can count on in just about any situation, and who I feel comfortable sharing just about anything with. But actually getting on the phone with someone I'm close with and either sharing my enthusiasm or venting my frustrations with is by far more effective than just about anything.

Scott,

I am in total agreement here. Nothing motivates better than talking with someone who knows how to pick you up. I believe there is a lot of truth the Biblical idea that "life and death is in the power of the tongue." Just look at how politics affects our lives. Psychologists tells us that positive self-talk can affect our physical health.

Sometimes just a kind word from a co-worker can make a tremendous difference in your day. It really is amazing how something as seemingly insignificant as kind words can have such a tremendous impact.

Yes Paul, I totally agree that we MUST fill our tanks with good fuel! We would never deliberately put bad gasoline into the engines or our car or not deliberately allow our tanks to fall empty!

Yet many times as entrepreneurs’, we tend to get so busy at times we neglect ourselves and put bad fuel into our own tanks by "default".

I read inspirational books, watch great programs such as the secret and others. I listen to great teachers, but the MOST important thing we can do is to be sure we are spending our time with others who are aligned with our principals and values. Avoid too much time with negative or TOXIC influences in our daily lives.

Television, radio etc. This is an area that can drain our energy and motivation quicker than we can refuel with books, tapes or other venues!

However we must keep in mind that like minds follow like minds. Not everyone we talk with is positive in fact mostly everyone in our inner is negative and if you are needing refueling it is not good to talk to these people because they will just still your dream! When I need refueling I read books. I'm sure we all have these titles in our library, THINK AND GROW RICH, LIVE YOUR DREAMS, THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING, AS A MAN THINKETH, THE HOLY BIBLE.

Full Circle Global Mentoring!
hhmmm what do I do to stay motivated?

I do a variety of things:

1. Read my motivational and inspirational passages each day

2. I have an inspirational message to myself that hangs over my computer screen and that drives me each time I log on

3. Sometimes just reading my e-mails from fellow virtual colleagues motivates and inspires me especially if they are sharing words of encouragement or something good that happened to them in business, I feel good when my fellow entrepreneurs are pumped and growing successfully

I truly am what you call a work-a-holic and I can work on my business from dusk until dawn and only get 3 hours of sleep and still be ready to go again the next day, so if burn out is inevitable then so be it I guess I will just finally rest then when it happens.

For some reason my business IS my passion and my drive :-) and i enjoy what I do so much and the people that I get to meet and partner with that nothing is more of a high and a motivation to me then to see business moving forward in a positive way and to find people who share my passion and drive for Independent business ownership.

p.s

to stay revived and to break up my day I will:

Listen to internet radio shows of interest to me

- Listen to some music
- attend online webinars/networking events

I agree with Scott, that the A1 way to recharge and get perspective on what I'm doing is talk to freinds, but if I can't do that for any reason, I go work on fiction for a while. There's been times I've been severely disheartened, written some stories (I'm doing some tounge in cheek Cthulu Mythos stuff at the moment) and I come back brighter, happier, and ready to take on anything.

:)

I think that its important to remember that what makes us great at what we do is what also makes US. For me, I'm a good entreprenur (I believe) because I use the money I make in IM to fund my writing projects - which in turn drives me to do better so that I can fund more books.

Well what motivates me?

Its strange but there is something inside of me that motivates me to pursue tasks that are not expected me, there is something that drives me to succeed and to create a world for myself. What motivated me to learn four languages? I do not know but it is helping me a lot in the realm of international business. But the thing that amazes me is that I have never felt that something motivates me. Its mostly my personal drive to become a better human being and i do that by trying to do everything that I am capable of doing. Its strange but we all get motivated in different ways, but I really don't have anything that motivates me apart from my personal drive.

Hi Paul,

Great question. As someone who seems to motivate and encourage everyone around him, I do need my own fuel as well. I usually read good books, listen to cds and mp3s and associate with others that have the same outlook on life as I do.

I will also provide a plug for my service as well. For those that are looking for additional sources of motivation, I provide Personalized Motivational Messages in mp3 format. You can learn more about these at www.personalizedmotivation.com. There are samples on the site to listen to. I am also happy to provide a sample of what I can do for you as well. Drop me an email and we'll put something together for you.

I hope that helps.

Hey Paul,

I stay motivated by knowing this is my life. I have a men's underwear company and a publishing company who are both fairly young. (As am I) and this is it. It's got to go somewhere and its all up to me. If nothing happens, thats all on me. That gets me fueled up and everyday I am on the go.

This isn't shameless advertising. Its very relevant to this post. Our book is for working professionals to keep them motivated. We post stories every Friday and have a funny comic strip that comes out every Weds. It's all related to people in the working world, how to deal with a boss, customers, etc. Check it out: http://fridayreflections.com

Hope this helps,

I always listen to audio programs to keep me charged up. My favorite is anything from Les Brown, preferably live seminars. If you don't feel great after listening to him or if you're not at least laughing and smiling, medical assistance may be required...

I find the audio much more effective than reading books on motivation because you can't get the passion and enthusiasm of the speaker from reading words on a page.

'The Secret' is an amazing movie that must be seen at least a few times. Then use it.

You may also want to checkout Jim Rohn, Denis Waitley, Brian Tracy and Chris Widener. Enjoy!

I sometimes go to the Public Library for an afternoon get-a-way.

No cell phones. No computers. Very few distractions.

Just browse a few books and business magazines for ideas.

I often leave with 3 to 5 pages of notes, written on paper.

Of course, had I brought my notebook computer, I could have typed the notes into the computer. But that would defeat the whole purpose of the trip.

Try it sometime. Just read what other Entrepreneurs have written. Your ideas will flow with theirs.

I do music. I am a singer/guitarist and a hobby producer so when I really am burnt, I stop answering the phone and give into the guilty pleasure of writing and recording music.

Besides that and perhaps more importantly, I meditate on Bible scripture (tho not as often as I should ;-) and I am involved with an inner city church that does outreach. I'll tell you it REALLY helps me maintain perspective. Work pressure, family responsibilities and overall life pressures can be difficult but seeing people at the outreach REALLY breaks my heart for them and makes me thankful for what I have. I am grateful to work from home and consider myself really blessed.

are entrepreneurs always on? great question...I have been told that I am pretty "high-energy" even when I am just having a regular conversation. Even if I am not amped or particularly excited, I can seem fired up to the casual observer, but there is clearly a difference. It is impossible not to have a down side to being amped all the time.

But for all practical purposes, I think that if you are aligned with your passion it is tough to burn out completely. Sure, there are times when you are tired from a hectic schedule, but that is different than burning out. If you are doing something that you are not passionate about it is only a matter of time before you burn out...count on it.

Then there is the matter of perseverence. That is a whole other topic, but one that I am fond of as well. It is the premise behind the book Suck it up, Buttercup! that was published this past fall...and which by the way, I have received my first royalty check from this past Friday! YAHOO! very cool! Now where was I???? yes, perseverence. Some people can just persevere through thick and thin and that also gives the illusion that someone is motivated all the time. I can make a slight distinction between being motivated and driven. Those that can persevere through the worst conditions tend to be driven versus motivated. In either case, if you can't be motivated, then be driven, if you can't be driven, then at least be motivated...it will get you further down the road than not being either one of them...Hope that helps, I am always glad to help.

If you find yourself short on motivation, feel free to pick up a copy of Suck it up, Buttercup! I guarantee there is no other book like it!

Regards,

Rob

I use everything I have. I'm very fortunate to have up front access professional sports, where I see what goes into creating a career, not just what the fans see for a three-hour game. That alone is part of my motivation. I watch programs, like Biography and such, besides sports, that also inspire. When I hear stories of others who went from the hood to the top, it motivates me.

I continually buy books that motivate me. My most recent purchases were What I Learned from Sam Walton (by Michael Bergdahl) and Playing for Paterno (by Charlie and Tony Pittman.

I go online and look for things to motivate me, including ideas on how to grow my business. Sometimes, I will have lunch with someone. I'm a member of some industry specific groups, to which some of them are very positive.

I'll go shopping and maybe be a good Samaritan, like giving my change to the kid in line behind me so he can buy his chocolate bar.

I don't think you can grab motivation from one area. I'll also take a "squirrel" break and watch the squirrels eat and play in the back yard, and marvel at their acrobatic prowess. I'll go pet the cat, hit (work out, not really hit it) the Nordic Track. You get the picture. It's paying attention to some of the little moments that really motivate. We take way too much for granted and are sometimes too caught up in a problem.

I'm also very fortunate that the client books I work on have also been quite motivating and positive, thus making me feel like I've created the best job on the planet.

I agree with some of you that The Secret is a great motivator. I love it!

My eyes are burning I've been on the computer all day, it's 7:00 pm on a Friday 4-9-2010 why am I here sitting in my office responding to this post. Am I motivated or crazy you make the call. You see approx 4 months ago I took the reigns over to do my own SEO work for my company called Bonte Medical Products. To date I have obtained a number of 1st place page rankings on Google and other search engines and have had companies aproach me to distribute their products because they were impressed by my presence on the web. I am in the process of coordinating my social media strategy with my SEO techniques to continue to obtain and increase high page rankings.
I don't need the "Secret nor motivational tapes" nor should you.

Momentum Breakers vs Momentum Makers:

Dr. John C. MaxwellA train travelling 55 mph on a railroad track can crash through a 5-foot thick steel-reinforced concrete wall without stopping. That same train, starting from a stationary position, won't be able to go through an inch-thick block in front of the driving wheel.

It is never the size of your problem that is the problem. It's a lack of momentum. Without momentum, even a tiny obstacle can prevent you from moving forward. With momentum, you'll navigate through problems and barely even notice them.

As a leader, your responsibility is to understand momentum, to get it moving for your organization, and to sustain it over time. Momentum can be tricky to comprehend, though, often appearing elusive and intangible. In this article, my goal is to give you handles so that you can better recognize how to generate momentum in your workplace. To help you grasp the concept of momentum, I'll outline ten momentum breakers alongside ten momentum makers.

Momentum Breakers and Makers
Momentum breaker - double-mindedness
Momentum maker - focus

By creating and following a clear and focused vision statement, a leader develops momentum. A leader drains away momentum by shooting at nothing or attempting everything.

Movement causes friction. When you paint a target for your team, you'll likely encounter resistance. As a leader, you can't restrict yourself by living inside of someone else's comfort zone. Great accomplishments require leaders to fix their gaze beyond what's easily attainable.

Momentum breaker - the past
Momentum maker - the future

An organization picks up steam when its leaders point to a better tomorrow. Momentum breaks down when leaders preoccupy themselves with the past. Or, as I've heard quoted, "Losers yearn for the past and get stuck in it. Winners learn from the past and let go of it."

Many people have powerful dreams. However, most don't realize that the viability of their ideal tomorrow is based on what they do today. The difference between a dream and wishful thinking is what you're doing now. Practice today what you want to be tomorrow. If you do it well enough, someday you may arrive at your dream.

Momentum breaker - individualism
Momentum maker - teamwork

If you want to kill momentum, then insist on doing things by yourself. Momentum grows through team victories in which numerous people can claim to have played a role. The level of celebration on a team depends upon the level of participation.

Momentum breaker - critical attitude
Momentum maker - constructive attitude

Tennis great Chris Evert said it best, "The thing that separates good players from great ones is mental attitude. It might only make a difference of two or three points over an entire match, but how you play those key points often makes the difference between winning and losing."

Momentum breaker - tradition
Momentum maker - creativity

Don't tear down the fence until you understand why it was built. At the same time, relentlessly question the logic, "that's how we have always done it." What worked in the past may be outdated and could hold you back in the future.

Momentum breaker - apathy
Momentum maker - passion

Passion energizes your talent and rubs off on those around you. If you have courage, then you will influence people based on your passionate convictions. If you lack courage, then you will only influence people to the extent of your comfort zone.

Momentum breaker - dishonesty
Momentum maker - character

Character is the sum total of our everyday choices. It cannot be built overnight. A trustworthy leader has a much easier time generating momentum than a leader with a reputation of being manipulative and deceitful.

Momentum breaker - conformity
Momentum maker - change

As John F. Kennedy said, "Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth." Sticking with the status quo won't create an ounce of momentum. Although it's difficult and may demand sacrifice, change is required to build momentum.

Momentum breaker - ingratitude
Momentum maker - gratitude

As a Chinese proverb states, "Those who drink the water must remember those who dug the well." No one can claim to be self-made. Whatever accomplishments we attain in life have connections to the goodwill and support of those around us. When we express thankfulness for the benefits bestowed upon us by friends and colleagues, then those people are more apt to aid us again in the future.

Momentum breaker - indecision
Momentum maker - action

I am never overly impressed with idea people. Anyone who takes a long shower can come up with a good idea. I'm impressed with a person who has the tenacity and discipline to make ideas happen.

I've seen many leaders break the momentum on their team by succumbing to the paralysis of analysis. Leaders have to act with incomplete information. You can never know all of the variables. Momentum and risk go hand in hand. As a leader, if you always play it safe, then you'll never inspire excitement in those you lead.

Closing Assignment
I'll leave you with a simple assignment. Assess your personal momentum. Are you speeding through the obstacles in your life or struggling to surmount even the smallest problems? What is responsible for your momentum or lack thereof? Do you recognize any of the momentum makers or breakers in your personal leadership?

To stay motivated I try to spend quality time with those people from whom I get postive vibes. Also reading success stories of people who went through harsh tribulations in life but continued to strive hard and attained their goals.

Primary motivation probably has to come from inside YOURSELF.
Your own drive, determination, your own dream, something you absolutely HAVE to have!

Paul is absolutely correct when he mentions that “Primary motivation probably has to come from inside YOURSELF.” Afterall you can understand yourself best. Self-motivation would come naturally.
